Jugaad at PepsiCo

Jugaad innovation is definitely on top at PepsiCo. Given that the macroeconomic environment in a constant state of change, PepsiCo must be ready to refresh and diversify its products to meet the needs of a dynamic marketplace. To fight the problems at hand, PepsiCo has defined 4 planks of sustainability, namely,  Financial Performance, Human Sustainability, Environmental Sustainability and Talent Sustainability

Financial Performance
PepsiCo established a Global Value Innovation Centre in India in late 2010. Rather than reinventing the wheel, this centre partners with Jugaad innovators worldwide to solve problems of manufacturing and distribution processes. A bottom up approach is used to deal with scarcity.

Human Sustainability
PepsiCo has focused a lot over the three main types of products, the ‘fun-for-you’ (Pepsi and Lay’s), better-for-you (zero-calorie Pepsi Max and Propel Zero) and the ‘good-for-you’ (Quaker and Tropicana). To hone PepsiCo’s focus on nutrition, CEO Indra Nooyi has appointed Dr. Mehmood Khan in MD to head the nutrition division and he is the CEO of Global Nutrition Group. Dr. Khan served as the Mayo Clinic as the Director of Diabetes, Endocrinology and Nutrition Clinical Trial Unit and as Consultant Physician in Endocrinology.  Dr. Khan translates his years of experience to products that are commercially viable to PepsiCo.

Environmental Sustainability
There is a clear need for PepsiCo to achieve water use efficiency to both improve product outputs and provide access to safe water for those in water-distressed areas. This prompted the members of PepsiCo India team to investigate ways to reduce water use throughout the supply chain. Solution was the direct seeding method of growing rice. Rice growing is water consuming process and direct seeding eliminated using water at various steps, thereby saving an average about 30 percent of the usual water requirement.

Talent Sustainability
The employees in different regions are empowered to experiment with out-of-box solutions at address scarcity in the local supply chains.
